Evaluation

Evaluation is key to the learning process. If we are not evaluating, too much learning is simply lost

Evaluating COIL using the I-TPACK-I model

One thing is to evaluate a local course. Another thing is to evaluate a COIL where learning takes place in an international context mediated by technology and affected by intercultural meetings and multiple approaches to content and pedagogy. The I-TPACK-I model acknowledges this complexity. Therefore we suggest that you include the evaluation questions below derived form this model. These qustions are asked to keep on pursuing and investigating the learning potentials of the multiple perspectives that arise in a COIL project, when different cultures, pedagogies, content and technologies meet.

  • Technological Knowledge

How did you and your international colleague identify differences in access to technology, and differences in understanding technology? And how did you accommodate such differences in your design?

  • Pedagogical Knowledge

How did you identify, make explicit and take advantage of the various pedagogical approaches and traditions among you and your international partner? And how did you negotiate teaching and teaching technique preferences?

  • Content Knowledge

How did you take advantage of different expertise fields, understandings, and practices related to the subject matter among countries and international partners?

  • Intercultural Knowledge

How did you take advantage of the intercultural learning space created among countries and international partners by providing experiential learning experiences on intercultural interactions?

Revisiting the COIL design template

In the UCOILD project we have benefited from revisiting our design choices using the design template. Reflecting on the design choices in retrospect clarifies in detail what to keep, what to improve, what you missed and what you need to get rid of.

Student evaluation questions and tasks

Below you find examples on how the UCOILD project has worked with student evaluations. Student evaluations were both used (1) to evaluate on students' learning outcomes and (2) to evaluate on the design of the COIL projects including students as co-developers.

After the final reflection-on-action session, the UCOILD project asked students to evaluate on their learning outcome. This was done electronically, using a survey tool.

Find the evaluation questions below, for inspiration:

We recommend including the reflection-on-action as a final part of the realization part of a COIL project to spark the learning processes even further through designated reflective questions. Find the reflection-on-action-questions here:

The UCOILD project prioritised asking students some critical questions about the COIL design. We asked students to provide feedback (1) individually (writing) as part of the survey that they were asked to complese to assess their learning objectives (see below) and (2) in groups (video-recording) with a more specific focus on the design.
